Lost on Fulford Road
This is the artwork that I used for my latest punch needle piece which will be on show at the gallery.
It has been described as having a sad quality. I wish I knew how that is conveyed in the piece- is it the colors? Is the forms? Is it the line? What kind of sadness? I think it may have something to do with the shadows. Shadows appear to be significant in my work.
Here is the punch needle piece before it was taken out of the embroidery hoop.I made some changes since then, but very minor ones.
Another wonderful piece by you, Jacqui. Wish I could make the exhibition. I agree that the shadows add an exciting dimension to the piece, but I also think the way the figure in the foreground looks down also contributes to the feel of it, along with the word “lost” in the title. For me the piece doesn’t so much convey sadness as despair and hopelessness – especially because the front figure is so lost she’s not aware of the other figure in the piece, who could possibly help. I love your needle punch. I’m not in the least bit surprised you’ve been invited to participate in the Fine Art show.
Thank you, it really helps to get such constructive feedback.
For me, it is very hard to see the piece objectively and to be honest, I don’t always know what is going on, even when I’ve finished!
I do sometimes find myself agonizing about the composition of the forms and colors and then discover that the subject matter takes a life of it’s own. It’s fascinating when that happens- is this a metaphor for life or what!
