Please see this Stellar Show before it ends on January 4, 2023!

Here are a few examples of the amazing artwork from the new members of the Southern Highland Craft Center.

Here are some of my favorite textiles from this show!

What a fascinating range of techniques and philisophical approaches to creating Textiles.

Debra Herman is very much influenced by the Japanese sensibility: she is interested in the wabi sabi aesthetic- beauty in the mundane, cast off and stained cloth which she then transforms into complex and rich surfaces. Her work is intense and controlled. Judith Otto has a background in fabric design and focuses on the interaction between wool and silk and the textures that are created when they are juxtaposed together. Color and texture are her passion and controlled to some extent by how she places her fabrics and fibers together. Pam Granger is a retired art teacher who finds peace and relaxation in creating her marbled work. She allows her materials to dictate the patterns, with the colors and patterns in nature as her inspiration.

From Left to right

Winters’s Thaw by Debra Herman.

‘ Wholeness, brokeness and rebirth are presented in shifting imagery honoring the beauty found in nature’s various life cycles.”

Fabrics are hand dyed and hand stitched with areas of cotton batting providing raised areas outlined with tight sitiching. Exquisite color, with layers of texture and stitching, some textures are subtle and some are bold. The colors harmonise beautifully yet are distinct and clear and well defined.Very Controlled and gorgeous.

Nuno Felted Scarf by Judith Otto

Nuno felted scarf by Judith Ott

“There is a magic that occurs in the finishing process, yielding results not forseen while creating the piece. It’s alchemy – each one a canvas of color and texturewith the wools allowing the silks to pucker and drape into a one-of-a-kind artworks.”

Ther fabrics are felted silk fabrics and hand dyed wool.

The unpredictable textures achieved in nuno felting remind me of the forces in nature- exanding and contracting where contrasting edges touch. Full of texture and rich color.

Gale by Pam Granger

Pam describes the process of marbling as peaceful and relaxing. The patterns and designs are inspired by nature, and the fluid nature of the marbling medium expands and changes with each movement of the comb or rake over the surface. Each surface is a wonder and full of surprises.

The fabrics are silk, marble medium and paint.

Beautiful colors and lyrical patterns. Pam ‘s hope is that each person who wears her scarf feels serene while wearing it. She has achieved her goal!
